3 ways to protect your WordPress site

As a WordPress user, you need to make sure your site is safe. In today’s world, data is more than just information – it’s the lifeblood of every business. Have you thought about what might happen if the data on your WordPress site got into the hands of a rival or cybercriminal? It could mean the end of everything you’ve worked for. To make sure you keep your WordPress site safe and secure, here are three easy steps you can follow.

1. Add a security plugin

The WordPress security plugins are a great way of protecting your site. They work in a similar way to other cybersecurity measures you may be familiar with, where after a number of login attempts the account is locked and login is prevented. Most cyberattacks work by generating hundreds or thousands of login attempts in order to guess the password, and these security plugins are a great way of preventing them.

2. Use long, complex passwords

This sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people either forget to do this, or can’t be bothered. All of your passwords should be long, complex, and unique, and this is especially true for your WordPress site. Your password should be at least eight characters long, but cybersecurity experts recommend ten characters for complete peace of mind. They should also contain a mixture of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters, to decrease the likelihood of them being guessed. It sounds like a simple step, and it is, but it will work effectively to keep your site safe.

3. Change the admin username

By default WordPress will set set your admin username to ‘admin’ – and this can be a major security flaw. When hacking into websites, cybercriminals will often target this admin feature, so make sure you change it as soon as possible in order to avoid attacks. To make sure you don’t forgot, integrate changing it into the rest of your WordPress development process – it may save your site in the long run.
